Who was William Goldman?

Born in 1931 in Chicago into a Jewish family, Goldman grew interested in becoming a novelist after taking a creative writing course. In 1957, when he was just 26, he published his first novel, The Temple of Gold.

In the mid-60s, he picked up screenwriting work after he was hired to adapt novelist Daniel Keyes’ Flowers for Algernon. His script led him to the Ross Macdonald detective film Harper, starring Paul Newman.

He would alternate writing scripts and publishing novels. His first original film script, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, earned him the best original screenplay Oscar. He then published The Princess Bride in 1973, followed by Marathon Man in 1974. For All the President’s Men, Goldman won the best adapted screenplay Oscar; his second Oscar.

Goldman was married to model Ilene Jones for three decades from 1961 to 1991. The pair welcomed two children- daughters, Jenny Rebecca, and Susanna. Ilene was a native of Texas and had modeled for Neiman Marcus. Her brother, Allan Case was an actor.
