Steven made his professional start to his speed skater career with his participation in the World Championships in 1991 and Winter Olympics in 1992. In 1991, he was part of the group that won Australia’s first World Championship but only made the bench in the Winter Olympics.

In the 1994 Winter Olympics, Steven was part of the short track relay team that won an Olympic bronze medal. Alongside Andrew Murtha, Kiera Hansen, and Nizielski, they became Australia’s first winter Olympic medalists. In the 1994 world championship in Montreal, Steven got severely injured after opponents blade sliced his right thigh and needed 18 months to recover.

In the 2002 Winter Olympics, Steven became an unlikely gold medalist in the short track 1000m event. He made his way into the semifinals after one of the players was disqualified. And from semi-final onwards, his strategy was to maintain his balance and hope for others to crash. Steven’s plan did work out as other competitors crashed and paved him a way to win the gold medal.
