Dorothy, a professor, and Ernest S. Hamilton, a professor of Biology, adopted Scott when he was six weeks old. His parents raised him in Bowling Green, Ohio with his two siblings: older sister, Susan and younger brother, Steven. Scott attended Kenwood Elementary School. Scott attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio. The former First Street in Bowling Green was named Scott Hamilton Avenue in his honor.
