A 16-year-old pianist Lauren Zhang from Birmingham has won the 40th BBC Young Musician 2018 competition. Accompanied by the CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra), Lauren triumphed with a performance of Prokofiev’s challenging 2nd Piano Concerto. She competed against an 18-year-old cellist Maxim Calver and 18-year-old saxophonist Robert Burton to win the prestigious award, just days before she begins her GCSEs. Who is Lauren Zhang? Bio: Birthdate, Family, Parents

Gifted with a natural genuine musicianship, the pianist Lauren Zhang was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the year 2001 or 2002 which is yet unknown. She hasn’t revealed her exact birthdate, but her age is 16. Information about the name of Lauren Zhang parents and family members are missing.

Lauren Zhang’s parents both work at Birmingham University. Lauren’s father is a physicist, and her mother is a statistician specializing in Econometrics.

Her parents raised her in Charleston, Illinois, where she started taking piano lessons at the age of four with Madeline Ignazito. After securing a place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Lauren along with her family moved to Birmingham in 2010. The finalist in the 1986’s BBC Young Musician competition, Robert Markham mentored her at the Junior Conservatoire.

On 28th of May, Lauren Zhang will perform on the BBC Radio 3 stage at BBC Music’s The Biggest Weekend. On 15th of July, she’ll also be performing at the Young Musician 40th-anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

A professional orchestra, conductor Mark Wigglesworth praised Lauren saying:

“When you meet Lauren she seems… I wouldn’t say ‘shy’, but controlled within herself and very confident about her own personality.”

He added:

“Then you hear her play and you discover this incredible depth and range of thought and imagination. That’s an extraordinary combination.”

Lauren has competed and won prizes in several competitions besides the BBC Young Musician 2018 competition. She has a competition pedigree, having showcased her talent at the Ettlingen International Piano Competition in Germany, the Wales International Piano Festival, and Young Pianist of the North International Competition.

Lauren has interest in history, physics, and biology, and she likes to read and chamber music in her spare time. It was her piano teacher Dr. Robert Markham who encouraged her to enter Young Musician of the Year.
