Nigerian-American lady Kechi Okwuchi is a survivor and a real-life inspiration to many, especially for burn survivors. She captivated the world’s attention in 2017 after she auditioned for the 12th season of America’s Got Talent. She was one of the finalists as she finished in the top 10 that season.

On 28 January this year, she even bagged Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent: The Champions. At age 16, she survived a plane crash that left her with third-degree burns. Though she experienced an extremely horrible past, she has defined herself as “brave” and “resilient” person.

Kechi Okwuchi Bio | Life After Plane Crash & Education

Born in the year 1989 in Orlu, Imo, Nigeria, Keechi Okwuchi is a singer and motivational speaker who gained global recognition after competing on the 12th season of America’s Got Talent. On 28th January 2019, she received Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell after she performed Calum Scott’s “You Are The Reason” on AGT: The Champion. 

Growing up, she attended Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja, Nigeria. On 10th December 2005, she experienced a catastrophic plane crash when she was traveling on Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 along with 60 of her classmates. She sustained three-degree burns over 65% of her body and remained in intensive care for over a month at the Milpark Hospital in South Africa. She was one of the two survivors out of 109 people.

Okwuchi moved to the United States in 2007 and later enrolled in the University of Thomas Houston, Texas. She graduated with a First Class degree on 16th May 2015. She also earned an MBA in Economics from the same university. Later, she gave a talk titled Girls- know thyself as a speaker at TedxEuston.

In 2017, she sang Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” in her audition for the 12th season of America’s Got Talent. She was a finalist on the show, which opened new paths for her. Since then, life has been busy and entertaining for Okwuchi as she has been performing all across the United States (Texas, Indiana, Maryland, Florida, and many others).

Now, she intends to move forward in faith with music as her goal.

She grew up in her hometown in a family of four. She is the firstborn child of her parents – Mike and Ijeoma Okwuchi. Her 18-year-old younger sister named, Zitara (born. 2000) attended Dawson High School.

Her mother, Ijeoma is a Lagos-born Nigerian author who dropped her first book titled “Refined for Rebirth” in 2012. The book is about the first few months after her daughter, Kechi’s miraculous survival from a horrible plane crash in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Ijeoma is also working on her second book called “Refined for Service,” which is a continuation of the story commenced in Refined for Rebirth.

Her father, Mike visits his family twice in a year. So, she spends most of the time with her mother, sister, and friends. She is an inspiration to her mother and younger sister as well.
